The Secret to Living Beyond 100 Years
The Secret to Living Beyond 100 Years
At The Exercise Room, we believe in the power of daily movement - and it turns out, science agrees!
We recently came across an article that aligns perfectly with our core values, and we think it’s a must-read.
Dr. John Scharffenberg, a 101-year-old preventive medicine specialist, shares his simple but powerful insight: The key to longevity isn’t just diet or stress management - it’s consistent daily exercise. Dr. Scharffenberg emphasizes that regular movement can outweigh many other health factors. Even individuals managing conditions like obesity or high blood pressure may outlive others if they prioritize daily activity. Even if someone is obese, if they exercise daily, they can still live longer than someone who is thin and inactive.
Exercise doesn’t just help burn calories—it improves heart function, boosts mood, strengthens bones, and supports immunity. His message is clear: daily exercise is non-negotiable for living a long, healthy, and fulfilling life.
We couldn’t agree more - it’s the small daily habits that build a strong, vibrant future!

Pull-Up Challenge Update
We didn’t get a lot of momentum from members but The Exercise Room team has jumped on board.
- Emile has pushed Peter Herdson army style on board. He’s getting through 3x10 sets of the first step - the TRX ropes.
- Lloyd and Jack have powered through the steps and are well on their way to increasing their numbers of unassisted pull-ups!
- Laura and Ella are jumping into the challenge too, testing their strength and progressing in their ability.
- Emile used to enjoy pull-ups but over time has let them go. The challenge has kickstarted him back into it. Starting with one pull up each day for 5 days in his first week, to 2 a day for 5 days in his second week and 3 a day for 5 days in his third week.
Small, consistent efforts lead to big achievements! Keep pushing! (literally)
Join the May Push-Up Challenge!
Build upper body strength, endurance, and mental toughness with us this month. This challenge is for everyone, from beginner to pro!
How It Works:
- Set a personal goal for the month (e.g. 200, 300, or even more!).
- Track your push-ups daily or weekly.
- Share your progress with the team or on the gym board.
- Celebrate your achievement at the end of the month!
Push-Up Tips:
- Proper Form: Keep your body in a straight line from head to toe, engage your core.
- Modify If Needed: Start on your knees or elevate hands on a bench.
- Set Daily Targets: Break your monthly goal into manageable daily numbers.
- Mix It Up: Try wide grip or triceps push-ups to target different muscles.
- Rest When Needed: Your muscles grow when they recover!
Coach’s Corner: Posture Alignment for Desk Sitters
Spending long periods sitting at your desk? It’s important to reset your posture regularly to avoid stiffness, pain, and poor alignment. Here’s a simple standing posture reset you can do anywhere:
- Ankles, big toes, knee bones and thighs together.
- Stand tall and keep looking at eye level.
- Hold this position for 2 mins (if you can).
Set a reminder to stand and realign every 30-60 minutes. A few minutes of mindful standing can undo hours of poor desk posture and keep you feeling more energized and balanced throughout the day.
